Fulbright project description:
Charged with preserving world-renowned but often physically fragile representations of animals from nearly every era of French history—from the cave paintings at Lascaux to the glass plate originals of Étienne-Jules Marey’s animal chronophotography—French cultural institutions must foster public appreciation for these treasures while protecting them from human harm, much as ecologists must both publicize and protect endangered animals. My project explores interfaces between France’s historic animal images and their contemporary spectators in French museums, libraries, and zoos. Reimagining these images into a book of poems, I hope to create a new space for audiences to encounter their fragile tether to the vanishing nonhuman world.
