Fondée en 1846, the Smithsonian Institution est un des plus importants organismes de conservation du patrimoine au monde. La Smithsonian Institution gère un parc de 19 musées et galéries (presque tous dans l'agglomération de Washington), le National Zoo, 12 centres de recherche, et 7 centres éducatifs.
