Celebrating 80 Years of Fulbright in Washington, D.C.

Last week, Martine Roussel, Executive Director of the Franco-American Commission – Fulbright France, represented the Commission in Washington, D.C. at the Fulbright Commission Executive Directors Meeting.

The meeting brought together representatives from the 50 Fulbright Commissions worldwide, alongside representatives from the U.S. Department of State and the Institute of International Education (IIE). Over several days, participants took part in working sessions and discussions focusing on Fulbright programs, alumni engagement, international cooperation and the future of the Program.

On October 21, the Executive Directors also had the opportunity and privilege to visit the U.S. National Archives in the presence of Tim Barrett, Fulbright alumnus to Japan.

The gathering took on particular significance on October 22 with the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Fulbright Program. The date also marked another important milestone for Fulbright France: the 78th anniversary of the creation of the Franco-American Commission, established on October 22, 1948.

Under a sunny Washington, D.C. sky, the week offered a meaningful opportunity to celebrate eight decades of Fulbright exchanges while looking to the future. It also provided a valuable occasion to reconnect with colleagues from around the world, exchange ideas and continue strengthening the international network that has fostered academic and cultural exchanges for generations.
