Media Literacy Seminar in Paris organized by Fulbright France (October 21 & 22)

In an age of easy access to information, distinguishing fact from fiction has become challenging: this seminar explored strategies to strengthen defenses against disinformation through education, critical thinking, technology, and international cooperation.

 

44 participants (all Fulbrighters):

- 20 US ETAs currently in 10 European countries for the year 2024/25 with The Fulbright program (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Estonia, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Moldova, Switzerland)
- 16 US 2024/25 Fulbright France English Teaching Assistants (ETAs) and students
- 8 Fulbright France Alumni: former French Assistants in the US (FLTA) & NGO leaders

 

The discussions at the Franco-American Commission and at the “Maison de la Radio” focused on these themes:

- Definition of "Disinformation, Misinformation, Malinformation"
- Workshop "Education and Misinformation in the Age of AI"
- Round table 1 "The Impact of Misinformation on Democracy"
- Workshop "Navigating the Maze: A World Café on Information Manipulation and Inclusive Societies"
- Round table 2 "Social Networks and the Information Crisis"
- Round table 3 "Foreign Interference: Case Studies"

- Carolyn Turpin: Fulbright Program Branch Chief, Europe and Eurasia / Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (U.S. Department of State)
- Pascal Confavreux: Deputy Spokesman for the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs
- Aude Favre (moderator): investigative journalist, President of the “Fake Off association” & founder of the “Citizen Facts” project
- Divina Frau-Meigs (Fulbright Alumna): education analyst and policy adviser focused on media literacy, AI, and e-learning for the European Commission, Council of Europe & UNESCO
- Laure Delmoly: member of CLEMI (Center for Media and Information Literacy)
- Anne-Sophie Dhiver: Deputy Head of Viginum (French government's service responsible for vigilance and protection against foreign digital interference)
- Pierre Dagard: journalist at Reporters Without Borders
- Steve Irakoze: Fulbright DEI coordinator
- Annina Claesson: MediaLab of Sciences Po
- Rudy Reichstadt: Conspiracy Watch
- Audrey Jammes: “Démocratie ouverte”

During this 2-day seminar, the 44 participants also had the chance to visit UNESCO (Global Media and Information Literacy Week will be celebrated worldwide from 24-31 October 2024) and to do a boat tour on River Seine!
